Descriptions

Individual Presentations

Individual oral presentations involve one presenter discussing a paper or research project and responding to audience questions. Visual aids, such as PowerPoint, may be used.

Presenters should not simply read a paper or read from their notes. Instead, presenters are encouraged to speak about key points in the paper or research project and engage the audience in a dialogue about the presentation.

Group Panel Presentations

Group panel discussions involve three to five presenters discussing a scholarly topic or research project and responding to audience questions. This type of presentation should be a lively discussion between panelists and the audience. Visual aids, such as PowerPoint, may be used.

Presenters should not simply read a paper or read from their notes. Instead, presenters are encouraged to speak about key points in the paper or research project and engage the audience in a dialogue about the presentation.

Individual or Group Workshop Presentations

Workshops involve one to three presenters leading a short discussion on a  particular topic, followed by audience participation. The purpose of a workshop is to introduce the audience to your subject and to involve them in using a new skill or technique. The presentation should be a hands-on, interactive and engaging experience for the audience.

Individual or Group Artistic Performances

Artistic performances involve the performance of creative pieces by one to five presenters. These performances must be part of the presenters' academic study.

Pieces can include: reading from an original creative piece; a dance performance; a dramatic reading, a vocal or instrumental performance or any other performing arts genre*. These pieces can be performed by an individual or a group. Performers must be able to frame their piece(s) in an academic/intellectual context and be prepared to answer audience questions. This is NOT an open mic.

*Note: Students interested in leading a presentation about a piece (or pieces) of visual art should follow the individual oral presentations group panel presentation guidelines.

Poster Session Presentations

Poster presentations are visual displays of your scholarly work or research project. All poster presenters (one to two) must be present with their poster and should be ready to engage in lively discussions with attendees about their work, answer questions, etc.

PDFs are available on the StAC website with further information about poster and presentation formats.
